Look under the hood and in the engine bay. See if the wear and tear match 60k miles (I doubt they will. I suspect odometer fraud).

Why do you suspect odo fraud?

Sorry, let me be more accurate. You should consider the possibility of odometer fraud. A base cab pick that old with so few miles, poor description, poor pictures taken in the dark, and slightly misaligned digits...

Its about the same cosmetic wear as SpecialBuick62's ranger. Its basically the same truck. I drove Buick's ranger today

If everything's legit, then it's a nice price for a truck with that mileage. But I agree with Dr Zoidberg (there's a sentence I never thought I'd say). With such little description and such terrible photos I'm suspicious. If you go see it and it looks good to your untrained eye, the next step BEFORE making an offer should be to tell him you want your mechanic to look it over and you want a Carfax report. If he seems like he's hesitant or flat-out against any of that walk away.

Seems high to me but I only like two types of vehicles in this class. Old beater ranger/s10/yota trucks for under a grand and the upcoming Colorado/Canyon preferably with diesel.

I asked for more pics in my email and more specifics on condition. Here's what I said:
"Hi, I'm interested in purchasing your 1997 Ford Ranger. Is there any damage to the body, frame, or drivetrain? Would it be possible to see more in depth photos of it, inside and out taken in better lighting? Also is it possible for me to come down and see it? I am anxious for your reply."
I think what he says in the reply would be indicative of the legitimacy of the advertisement

I plan on haggling him down, and I think its priced in expectation of that

That is definitely understandable. I always price with room to haggle and not get pissed. If they offer asking I'm pleasantly surprised. If this is legit 2-2.5k seems like a pretty good price.

I'm wary of a whole three pictures taken in the dark. You saw SB's ranger in person, but not yet this one. Use your best judgment.

The ad went up 3 hours ago, he probably took the pics today. also SB62's ranger has about the same mileage, that's why I'm using his as a wear matrix

That's a good plan. I'm just offering my highly anecdotal experiences. I am highly distrustful of too-good-to-be-true mileage and price, and poor vehicle descriptions. What the story behind this? Why so few miles? Is this the original owner? Does he really have NOTHING interesting to spend 5 minutes to write up about? Just passed emissions? Well I certainly hope so on a car that has barely been broken in. I assume this is the 3.0 (says XL on the fender) but who knows.

I hope its a 4cyl (for gas mileage) but I'd be ok with either an i4 or a v6. I think its 80% up to par, but I'd still worry about that extra 20%

Well I'm a big fan of the Ranger. I hope this one ends up being a diamond in the rough, and if not, may you find another one in good shape. And a curse on Ford for taking the Ranger away from us, and reintroducing it as a bloated abomination overseas.

Aside from my ROYGBIV/Jezebel articles, I've been trying to be on a staycation during my summer of no-pay from my teaching job. I did pretty much nothing for all of August, intentionally. I spent it all catching up on multiple seasons of US TV I haven't watched in years. I marathoned The Fosters, Suits, and I'm finishing up a marathon of three seasons of Switched at Birth. I'm definitely planning to do a write up on The Fosters for being so intersectional. Switched at Birth isn't quite nearly so, but it does an excellent job of introducing deaf culture to otherwise ignorant audiences (including me).
Yesterday was my first day back at work (our labor day is combined with Thanksgiving, which is usually around the same day, two years ago Japanese Labor-Thanksgiving day was exactly the same day as US Thanksgiving), and I'm back to working on some pretty heavy investigative pieces for ROYGBIV/Jezebel, and I'll try to do some pieces for Oppo/Jalopnik as well.

Glad to here youve been keeping yourself busy. Another question: would there be any legitimate reason why the odometer numbers would be misaligned?
Kat Callahan
> Denver Is Stuck In The 90s
09/02/2014 at 04:41 | 0 |
Eh, depends on what you mean by legitimate. Anyone who had a legitimate reason would probably be up front about it. And even then, even a reasonable person might think it was legitimate, it may not be legal . I mean, I think salvage titles in some states allow you to swap in random instrument clusters without giving a single fuck about what the odometer reads, but then if you sell the vehicle, this has to be made clear.

The body lines look straight, so I dont think its a salvage. but what I mean is could a certain type of driving cause the mechanics in the odometer to become misaligned? I basically mean is there a possible reason that the numbers are misaligned besides it rolling over (its too clean to have been driven that much) and fraud?
Denver Is Stuck In The 90s
> Kat Callahan
09/02/2014 at 04:45 | 0 |
also, They arent misaligned too bad so maybe its a loose spring or something? maybe a printing error on the dial?
Kat Callahan
> Denver Is Stuck In The 90s
09/02/2014 at 04:50 | 0 |
...you mean like as if something in the communication between the sensors, the ECU, and the instrument panel led to the odometer rolling over numbers slower than it should have? I mean sure it's possible , but if you're asking me how likely it is, I have no clue. That's way beyond my level of expertise.
I'm going to go with occam's razor here. If you poke around the truck and it looks pretty damn broken in, and you're not given any adequate reason (maybe it was a work truck, and it was driven short distances but driven hard or something, like say driven for hours a day with heavy loads in a quarry or something), I would run, not walk, as quickly as you can far, far away from this vehicle.

I'll have to see what the reply brings. This odometer issue has me worried, there arent alot of other trucks on craigslist right now. This may be my only shot for a while. I hope its okay.

Cool, I hope it works out.
Just make sure the odometer hasn't rolled over. My first truck was a '94 Ranger with 075XXX on the odometer... except it had rolled over twice already.

I doubt it rolled over, The interior is too nice. I think the odometer is screwy, its really not badly misaligned. Its almost like some piece inside just got tired.

Not saying this one isn't legit, but interior condition isn't really the biggest indicator or miles. Mine was nearly impeccable.
Only picture I could find. Steering wheel and seat covers were just on to keep everything nice, and took them off before I sold it.

I just put an index card up to my screen with a pic of the odometer on it..... Its soooooo close. I think its a manufacturing defect or age.

Go check it out, it is hard to find a ranger under 100K in miles. And if the seat is the biggest problem it is a near perfect vehicle.
